Hammermen Talks with Vince Gillen

The Hammermen of Greenock – Engineering Profiles of the Lower Reaches Town.

Our next Hammermen Talks event will be taking place on the 27th of June at 6pm. Our speaker will be Vince Gillen, Social History curator at the McLean Museum in Greenock where he has worked for the last 30 years.

Vince has a Joint Honours degree from Glasgow University in Scottish History and Social & Economic History. He has curated exhibitions on many subjects over the years, including topics such as Scotts of Greenock, Inverclyde’s Great War, Inverclyde’s War (WW2), Greenock Morton, Centenary of Local Scouting, Sugar, Ships and Slavery, and Centenary of Cinema. He has written and published books to go along with these subjects and now runs Cartsburn Publishing, dedicated to getting local stories out to the general public and telling the important role of the towns of Inverclyde throughout modern history. His latest publication is a new History of Greenock and its connections with the Sugar Industry.

Established specifically to compete with Glasgow; Greenock has a proud and independent past. This illustrated talk will highlight the people behind local shipbuilding and engineering firms and their role in the development of the Port of Greenock. John Scott, James Watt, Robert Thom, Robert Sinclair, Robert Steele, Caird, Hastie, Rankin, Blackmore, Kincaid and others will be highlighted.
